The Symbiosis Institute of Design (SID), Pune, offers a four-year Bachelor of Design (B.Des) programme designed to develop students’ creative thinking, design skills, problem-solving abilities and professional practice. The programme is a 160-credit undergraduate degree awarded by Symbiosis International (Deemed University).

Students can pursue design in areas including Graphic Design, Animation & Film Design, User Experience Design, Product Design, Interior Space Design, Fashion Design and Fashion Communication.

Eligibility Criteria

Students applying for the B.Des programme must:

  • Have passed the 10+2 examination.
  • Have obtained at least 45% marks in the qualifying examination (40% for candidates belonging to the reserved category).
  • Alternatively, candidates who have passed the D. Voc. stream in the same or an allied sector may apply.
  • Students from any Class 12 stream can apply for the design specializations; a Science stream is not mandatory for Industrial Design.


Admission Process

Admission to the B.Des programme is conducted through the Symbiosis Entrance Exam for Design (SEED) followed by the Portfolio Review and Personal Interaction process.

The process includes:

  1. Online Registration – Register for SEED and the SID admission process.
  2. SEED – Appear for the online Symbiosis Entrance Exam for Design.
  3. Shortlisting – Candidates qualifying in SEED are shortlisted for the next stage.
  4. Portfolio Submission – Shortlisted candidates upload their portfolio.
  5. PRPI Task – Candidates complete and upload the assigned task.
  6. Portfolio Review & Personal Interaction (PRPI) – Candidates participate in the online interaction.
  7. Final Merit List – Selection is based on cumulative performance across the admission stages and information provided in the application form. 

About SEED

The Symbiosis Entrance Exam for Design (SEED) is conducted online

The exam is 60 minutes long with 60 questions.

Exam Timings:

One hour between 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on the test day.

SEED Exam test structure:

The SEED will be a 60 minutes exam having 60 questions. The questions could be MCQ, Match the Columns, Fill in the blanks, image-based and comprehension based. The paper will contain a mix of questions related to Visual Sensitivity and Judgement, Observational, Perceptual and Reasoning abilities, Problem Solving, Basic knowledge of Logic of Science and Mathematics, Art, Craft and Culture, Design and Environment.

Portfolio & Personal Interaction

The portfolio gives applicants an opportunity to demonstrate their creativity, interests and design thinking. SID indicates that portfolios can include original work such as sketches, illustrations, paintings, photography, craft projects, digital artwork, models, creative writing and personal projects. During the Personal Interaction, applicants may be asked about their portfolio, creative process, interests, chosen specialization and motivation for studying design.

Programme Duration

The B.Des programme is a four-year full-time undergraduate degree, structured across eight semesters.

Important Note

  • SEED is compulsory for B.Des admission at SID.
  • There is no age limit for admission, provided the candidate meets the eligibility requirements.
  • The admission process is conducted online, including SEED and the Personal Interaction stages.
  • For international students, admissions are handled through the Symbiosis Centre for International Education (SCIE).
